Aggressive geese defend nests

What started as a fishing trip to the lake ended with a visit to the emergency room for a 5-year-old boy who was attacked by a Canada goose last week.

Chase Standefer was walking near Jolie Island with his father Robert Price last Sunday afternoon when the goose attacked. Chase suffered a deep cut on the top of his head, but emergency room staff members would not stitch the cut because the goose is a wild animal, and bacteria from it could infect the cut. His mother Jean Price said the cut was deep and went all the way to the boy's skull. With the help of antibiotics, she said the cut is starting to heal.

Jean Price said she wants to see the city put up warning signs so children know to watch out for the geese because her son did not know he was walking toward a goose nest.

"We just wanted to have a picnic and trip to the lake on the nice, sunny day, and it ended so terribly," Jean Price said.

She said Chase is now terrified of geese and is not too thrilled about going back to the lake. In an effort to encourage him to fish, Jean Price said Bass Pro Shop is donating some fishing equipment to her son.

Canada geese are in nesting season from mid-March to mid-May and are prevalent throughout the city. Steve Probst, general manager of the Community Association, said representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation counted 38 nests, located around the shorelines of the lake and on a couple islands in the lake.

Holly Berthold, spokesperson for MDC, said the geese may become aggressive during nesting season because they are trying to protect their eggs. She advised residents to avoid the geese if at all possible.
